What does it take to found or work in a startup company? Are you a mid-career chemist looking for a new challenge? Are you a self-driven STEM student with an independent spirit? Are you curious to know more? Join us to listen to Dr. Jim Tung and Dr. Carla Pavone discuss entrepeneurship and startups.

Abstract: Dr. Tung is a member of the Portland ACS Section, and helped co-found the Oregon Science Startup Forum, a one-day course in science entrepreneurship. He'll introduce stories of chemical entrepreneurs from undergraduates who founded their own beer testing business, to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who founded companies searching for rare disease cures based on their research science. Are you a mid-career researcher? You too can found your own company and put your scientific and chemical expertise to work for yourself. Jim will also cover national resources that are available through the American Chemical Society for entrepreneurs.   

Following Jim's presentation, Dr. Pavone, Program Director of MIN-CORPS, will speak. MIN-CORPS is part of a larger national trend to boost education in STEM fields and promote university-based entrepreneurship. MIN-CORPS and related programs help guide and mentor students with entrepreneurial aspirations to broaden their business knowledge and personal leadership abilities. Although MIN-CORPS is currently only available at the UM, Carla will discuss efforts to offer the program to out-state students.

 

Bio: Jim Tung is a Councilor for the Portland Section of the American Chemical Society, and a co-founder of the Oregon Science Startup Forum, a one-day course in science entrepreneurship. The Forum is in its fifth year of bringing science entrepreneurship to scientists and engineers throughout Portland and Oregon. In his professional life, he is the business development manager at Lacamas Laboratories in Portland, OR. An Oregon native, Jim got his B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Oregon, his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, with postdoctoral experience at Pfizer's laboratories in La Jolla, CA. He is the past chair of the Portland Section of the American Chemical Society. He has interests in process chemistry, social media outreach and encouraging career exploration and development for younger chemists.

Carla Pavone is Program Director of the Minnesota Innovation Corps (a site of the NSF-funded National I-Corps). Carla facilitates technology commercialization across the U of Minnesota by developing and coordinating educational and coaching programs for STEM students, post-docs, research staff and faculty and also teaches entrepreneurship and strategy courses at the Carlson School of Management. In addition, Carla serves on two nonprofit boards: Social Venture Partners - Minnesota, which helps innovative nonprofits that focus on at-risk youth, and Women Venture, which helps women entrepreneurs who have limited access to resources. Carla holds a PhD from the Carlson School of Management, MBA from the Harvard Business School, and Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
